Commute Intelligence FAQ
What exactly is a 'DriveTax'?
DriveTax is the total financial burden of your commute. It combines 'hard costs' (gas, maintenance, tires) with the 'opportunity cost' of your time—calculating how much of your hourly wage is lost while sitting in traffic.
How are gas prices calculated?
We pull real-time gas price data by state via AAA. Our calculator uses your specific state's current average to ensure your 'out-of-pocket' estimates are as accurate as possible.
Does this tool factor in vehicle depreciation?
Yes. In addition to fuel, we factor in a standard per-mile maintenance rate ($0.15 - $0.20) which covers tires, oil changes, and the general wear-and-tear that lowers your car's resale value over time.
Why do I need to enter my hourly wage?
Time is money. If you spend 10 hours a week commuting and earn $50/hour, you are effectively giving up $500 worth of your life every week. We calculate this to show you the 'True Cost' of living further from work.
How accurate is the commute time for my zip code?
Our data is powered by the U.S. Census Bureau's ACS 5-year estimates. We use the 'Mean Travel Time to Work' for your specific county or planning region to provide a realistic baseline.
